UPSC CAPF exam pattern

Both papers are held on the same day, offline. Paper II is evaluated only for candidates who clear the cut-off in Paper I, so Paper I is the real filter.

Selection runs in three stages: the written examination, then the Physical Efficiency Test, Physical Standards Test and medical examination, then the interview. Final merit is decided by the written marks and the interview together.

Paper I syllabus — General Ability and Intelligence

General Mental Ability

• Logical reasoning, quantitative aptitude including numerical ability, and data interpretation.

General Science

• General awareness and scientific temper.
• Comprehension and appreciation of scientific phenomena in everyday life.
• Space and telecommunication, and their applications in daily life, including information technology, biotechnology and environmental science.

Current Events of National and International Importance

• Culture, music, arts, literature, sports, governance.
• Societal and developmental issues, industry, business, globalisation.
• Interplay among nations and international affairs.

Indian Polity and Economy

• The Indian political system and the Constitution of India.
• Social systems and public administration.
• Economic development in India, regional and international security issues, human rights and their indicators.

History of India

• Social, economic and political aspects, with emphasis on the Indian national movement.

Indian and World Geography

• Physical, social and economic aspects of the geography of India and the world.

Paper II syllabus — General Studies, Essay and Comprehension

Paper II has two parts. It may be written in English or Hindi, except the precis and comprehension sections, which must be answered in English.

Part A — Essay (80 marks)

• Essays on modern Indian history, especially the freedom struggle.
• Geography, polity and economy.
• Knowledge of security and human rights issues.
• Analytical ability on contemporary topics.

Part B — Comprehension and language (120 marks)

• Comprehension passages with short-answer questions.
• Precis writing.
• Developing counter-arguments and simple grammar.
• Other communication and language skills, including cohesion and reordering of sentences.

Physical standards and the medical stage

Candidates who clear the written papers face the Physical Efficiency Test and Physical Standards Test. Height, chest and vision requirements differ for men and women, and relaxations apply to certain categories and regions. The exact standards are set out in each year’s notification, so check that PDF rather than relying on any coaching site, including ours.

The PET typically includes a timed run, long jump and shot put, with different standards for men and women. It is qualifying in nature.
